In 1912 a consortium of commodities investors assembled a company to hydraulically mine the Placer Gold nuggets and down to dust from the mounds of sand bars in and through the Grand Canyon (look up the New York Times 1912).
In 1994 California Senator Feinstein orchestrated controversial take over of one of the largest gold deposits in the world, contained in the Chocolate Mountains of California, now part of the Naval Weapons Live Firing Range.
